Domesticated Landscapes examines the human struggle for habitat. It is a genuine behavioural trait of our species to alter the environment in order to fulfill our very own needs. Eventually this demand of resources has a profound effect on surrounding landscape. Las Vegas is the fastest expanding metropolis in the United States, with a population increase of 41.8 per cent from 2000 to 2010. The harsh climate and the nature of the environment increase the city’s need for energy. The creation of a habitat for 575 000+ people within a single decade drastically transformed the terrain.

Due to the crisis in Spain the desperation of many young Spanish people forces them to take their last savings and move to the UK in order to find work. As they live on a budget and often struggle with the culture and language, finding employment becomes a very stressful and exhausting task and many fail to find the lifeline they have desperately been looking for. Eventually those who cannot make it will resign and go back to Spain. This is the story of Angel Lopez, 36, one of these economic refugees.

This series of constructed photographs was inspired by the campaign “One Shot”, which is organised by Amnesty International. It deals with the effects the International Arms Trade has on our lives. The series also appears in the book “One Shot: Conflict”, a collaboration between Amnesty International Scotland and BA (Hons) Photography & Film students from Edinburgh Napier University. http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3117237
